Ancient paths III

On the other side of the mountain a branch of this path disappears under farmland. It heads down to the village just visible in the right of the picture. From there it meanders through the hills to the left, connecting mountain villages to Bourdeaux.

This tranquil scene holds a dark secret. In medieval times the daughter of a local noble escaped an arranged marriage and eloped with her lover, a boy from the village. Angry brothers gave chase, blood was shed, and the girl was dragged back to her father's castle above the village. Outraged families raised armies and battle ensued. The local river, they say, ran red with the blood of the fallen. The distraught girl threw herself to her death from the highest ramparts of the castle. Today, the villagers commemorate this tragic tale with a pageant every midAugust.
