Slicing the Beast

At Magus Level of Play I let you slice right through the Mandelbrot Set and produce another 3D view of the Beast.

Click on User Level on the Control Panel.

Select level

FracRove displays the Level of play dialog. Choose Magus.

Select slice

Click on Explore Slice on the Control Panel.

FracRove displays this dialog on which you can choose a slice of the Mandelbrot Set to explore.

FracRove should display a slice map. If it doesn't, click the Show slice map button.

Slice map

The mouse controls the position of the slice bar. When you have the position you want, click on Do this one and FracRove generates the picture at that slice on the Set. The relationship of this slice to the conventional Set is that it is at 90° to the screen.

Sliced brot

You can explore this slice in exactly the same way as the conventional Mandelbrot Set.
Alternatively, you could generate a series of closely-related slices and assemble them with a graphics program into a 3D model of the Mandelbrot Set with the chosen axis, like this:

This was produced from 18 slices saved as *.bmp files and imported into PaintShopPro, using the layer feature for each slice.
