I've been camping down here since the early 1970's, and there are not many campsites even today. Unless you have a really keen sense of adventure, it's best to look online for locations before you start out, especially if you have a family.
Those who prefer holidays under cover rather than canvas will find some absolute gems of auberges scattered around these hills. Those close to major towns and cities, such as Narbonne, Bezier, and Carcassonne, will be full throughout the high season. However, a friend and I set out one Bastille Day holiday (14th July) and found half empty auberges in stunning locations in those hills.
