History

History buffs will have a field day down here:

• Hannibal stopped over by the coast on his way to attack Rome (circa 214 BC).
• The Vandals and Visigoths came here in the 5th Century AD.
• The Saracens invaded and were repelled in the 8th Century AD.
• The Emperor Charlemagne came through here in the late 8th Century AD.
• The Albigensian Crusade in the 13th Century AD against the Cathar heresy left a still-visible mark across this land. South of us towards the Pyrenees you'll find ruined Cathar fortresses to wander around.
